About an hour south of Macon, nestled in the flat piedmont of middle Georgia, is Hamilton Place farm. As the story goes, Joseph Columbus Hamilton bought the original 400 acres of mostly pine forest in the late 1870’s for $75 and a fine shotgun. Then he set about building a home and turning it into a working farm.
One of the first projects was constructing a sawmill and turning the pines into lumber, the forest to fields. The house was built in 1880 from those pines and the crops were diverse. Cotton, peanuts, corn, and sugarcane were planted, and a dairy was soon added.
The brick walls in the shady yard were once a cool shelter for milk storage. Now they’re a fire pit for guests and visitors. The circular columns on the wraparound porch were fashioned from solid pine logs pulled from the rich bottomland.
Dr. Ann Hamilton is one of the last surviving Hamiltons, and the daughter of Herbert W. Hamilton, Joseph’s youngest son. Except for two years at Georgia Military Academy, he lived and worked the farm his entire life.
Dr. Hamilton says when her grandfather, Joseph Columbus proposed to his wife Laura Annnie Williams Hamilton, he promised her, “I have a fine home here that would make you happy.” She accepted.
Together they raised a family that has lived here continuously for three generations. Farming is hard work and labor intensive. It has always taken many hands to successfully run the farm.
At one time during and after the Depression, there were as many as five tenant families living in houses on the property. Those houses are gone now, and progress has replaced the mules with tractors, the carriages with automobiles.
But the wide yard remains, the house has been immaculately restored, and the large red barn turned into an expansive event venue, hosting weddings, retreats, and special occasions.
Pecan trees and blooming foliage spread across the landscaped grounds. A soft wind moves over the fields, and the views from the rocking chair front porch are serene and timeless.
